Kernside Business Association – Meeting Minutes

Date: October 13, 2025Location: Recorded Virtual MeetingMeeting Called By: Kernside CoordinatorsAttendance: Multiple participating businesses and community members

1. Marketing Materials & Fall Coloring Contest

  • Printed “Maximum Leaflets” designed by June have been distributed to ~26 businesses. Additional posters and spooky stamps are available for locations that need them.

  • Businesses encouraged to display posters prominently and keep leaflets on counters.

  • Coloring contest underway; entries to be submitted near the end of the month (exact date previously published).

2. Trick-or-Treat Event (Oct 30–31)

  • Event runs during each participating business’s open hours due to varying schedules.

  • Clarification: No single unified block of time; activities occur while shops are open.

  • Some businesses (e.g., martial arts studio) will not be open on the 30th–31st or on Black Friday.

  • Participants encouraged to post their specific hours on social media so families know when to stop by.

Activities & Ideas

  • Busking-style live music:

    • Potential musicians include contacts from Curbside Serenade. Outreach pending.

    • Musicians can be scheduled based on their availability, then placed in participating businesses.

  • Kid-friendly “face cutout” photo props being created by a participating business.

  • No-purchase-required candy handouts are acceptable; individually portioned items preferred for food safety (portion cups, individually wrapped treats, etc.).

  • Martial arts studio will host three Halloween classes for anyone in costume; photos/video encouraged.

3. Prize Collection for Event Participation

  • Participants who complete their punch card and post a selfie tagging Kernside (and ideally the business they’re visiting) will be entered into a prize drawing.

  • Businesses to submit donated prizes to the organizer via the Instagram coordination group.

  • Digital drawing will be held on Instagram. Physical prize collection will be centralized.

  • Expectation: More prizes than entries, enabling multiple winners.

4. Holiday Lights Installation

  • Permit submitted and resubmitted for approval to install lights on approximately 45 trees along 28th Ave; permit is valid for three years once granted.

  • After approval, businesses will be contacted to confirm:

    • Willingness to have lights on nearby trees

    • Access to power

  • Discussion about potential light suppliers, including:

    • Neighborhood businesses who may sell/install holiday lights

    • Individual contractors who specialize in seasonal lighting

    • Wholesale options

  • No supplier selected yet.

5. Winter Holiday Programming – Carolers

  • Plan to organize carolers to perform along the street, focusing on busy pedestrian/business times.

  • Desired: Groups that come “performance ready” (no need for Kernside to provide arrangements or rehearsals).

  • Possible outreach targets:

    • PSU choir programs

    • PCC (if applicable)

    • Local high school choirs

    • French American International School

  • Businesses needed to “host” caroling groups with light refreshments.

  • Avoid dates conflicting with Peacock Lane to maximize attendance.

6. Vacant Commercial Properties

Discussion on several empty storefronts:

  • Former Starbucks location: Confirmed vacant. Potential venue for holiday installations.

  • Idea: Host the popular “Santas” installation inside the vacant Starbucks space if owner approval is obtained.

  • Other vacancies mentioned:

    • Former Working Code site

    • Tiny Hands location

  • Status of 50 Licks: Construction delayed; reopening timeline unclear and likely months away.

7. Next Steps / Action Items

  • Marketing / Posters: Continue distributing leaflets and encouraging business-side social posts.

  • Event Hours: Businesses to announce their own Trick-or-Treat hours on Instagram.

  • Music: Outreach to potential musicians (David / Curbside Serenade contacts).

  • Prizes: Businesses to submit prize offerings via Instagram group.

  • Holiday Lights: Await permit approval; begin scouting light suppliers.

  • Carolers:

    • Organizer will email schools.

    • Members to share additional contacts.

  • Vacant Starbucks Space: Outreach to property owner/manager to explore temporary holiday use.
