Kernside Business Association – Meeting Minutes

1. Halloween Trail Recap
Overall turnout was moderate; higher participation the day before Halloween, lower on Halloween due to rain and traditional trick-or-treating routes.
Feedback:
Many children did not have bags; misprinted Kernside tote bags were given out.
Suggestion for next year: Focus on the days before Halloween to increase traffic and encourage repeat costume use.
Submissions and winners:
Winners were posted and tagged on Instagram.
Winners will pick up prizes at the next Kernside Fair.
2. Christmas Tree Lighting Update
Mallory received the ornamental tree lighting permit: 45 trees approved.
Next step: Match each tree with a business willing to supply power and ideally contribute lights.
Clarification needed:
How trees are powered (typically via outdoor outlets with extension cords).
Mallory will send a map of tree locations to the board.
Timeline: Lights planned for early December through the month.
3. Kernside Logo Featured in Film
Kernside will appear in an upcoming mid-budget Amazon/BuzzFeed film titled “Whodunit.”
Story centers on two Portland friends; producers are seeking iconic Portland locations.
Kernside businesses may have opportunities to be featured or support production.
4. Meeting Attendance Challenges
Discussion on low attendance at monthly meetings and Happy Hour events:
Feedback & Suggestions
Timing: Evening Happy Hours did not increase attendance; some members cannot attend due to work schedules.
Community Inclusion: Consider inviting neighbors, not just businesses.
Communication Improvements:
Send email reminders ~3 business days before meetings.
Add meeting info to:
Instagram bio or Linktree
A pinned Instagram post for easy resharing
Website homepage + Upcoming Events page
Clarify that meetings are open to businesses and neighbors.
Improve visibility on website; current info is buried on the “Get Involved” page.
Calendar Integration:
Add a Google Calendar / iCal link in newsletters.
Explore sending calendar invites from the email list.
5. Website Notes
Board members expressed interest in improving:
Meeting visibility (homepage placement, upcoming events).
Ease of posting minutes and events.
Website updates will be coordinated with Shay.
6. Newsletter Items
Next newsletter expected mid-month.
Suggestions for inclusion:
Black Friday promotions
Small Business Saturday announcements
Any business updates or community events
Send announcements promptly so they can be included.
7. Member Update
One member shared upcoming medical leave in December (hysterectomy) and may need support or backup for hosting future meetings.
Board expressed willingness to assist as needed.
